Cracey Face: Interview with Denisa Kraus

From the smokey lens of Jupiter Moons:

If you’ve peaked behind the curtain of Nanaimo’s art scene, then the face and name of Denisa Kraus are likely familiar. The Czech-born/Vancouver Island-based photojournalist is highly involved in documenting Nanaimo’s arts & culture in various forms including interviews, reviews, photography, and co-hosting a radio show. At present, Kraus is finishing up a Digital Media degree at Vancouver Island University where she holds the position of Arts and Entertainment Editor for the schools lone newspaper, The Navigator. Today Denisa talks with me about CraceMountain, the meaning of life and Nanaimo’s notorious Haliburton Street.

Hi. Who are you?

I’m that Russian chick with a camera.

Describe your first experience at Crace△Mountain?

Nine in the evening, nobody around, shiny things everywhere, Katie jumps out from behind a aluminum foil curtain and hands me a beer. Oh, wait a minute… months before that, I was going to a show at Crace△Mountain, but wasn’t sure which house it was and felt too shy to ask some dudes standing out front, so I just walked by back and forth a couple times and then took a wonderful stroll along Haliburton street… awkward:}

What is the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is a philosophical question concerning the significance of life or existence in general. It has been the subject of much philosophical, scientific, and theological speculation throughout history. There have been a large number of proposed answers to these questions from many different cultural and ideological backgrounds. I googled this..

What would you choose as your last meal, ever?

Small fries.

Share a childhood recollection.

Horses & girl scouts.

Bad habits?

Biting my nails. I’d bite my friends’ nails, if they let me…

Best habits?

Rolling tobacco.

Most unforgettable dream?

Whenever there’s a horse involved, I prick up my ears. It’s telling me something.

Spirit word?

You’re showing Nanaimo to a friend visiting. What do you show them?

Benson sunrise, Haliburton street, the Vault. Given that they’re staying over at Crace△Mountain so they already know what’s up with that place.

You can view Denisa’s work at the sites listed below and tune into her foreign coo on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Show Wednesday evenings from 6-7 on CHLY 101.7 fm.
